Knowledge and suberogatory assertion

چکیده
I accomplish two things in this paper. First I expose some important limitations of the contemporary literature on the norms of assertion and in the process illuminate a host of new directions and forms that an account of assertional norms might take. Second I leverage those insights to suggest a new account of the relation ship between knowledge and assertion, which arguably outperforms the standard knowledge account.

متن کاملKnowledge and Assertion
Leading proponents of a wide variety of contemporary accounts of knowledge assume that knowledge is the norm of assertion. The assumption is central to the debate between contextualists and invariantists about the correct account of knowledge. DeRose (2002) argues that the knowledge norm for assertion favours contextualism, Hawthorne (2004) uses the knowledge norm to support subject-sensitive i...
متن کاملYou gotta believe
I argue that proper assertion requires belief. Jennifer Lackey has recently argued otherwise. Here I respond to Lackey’s argument and provide positive evidence that permissible assertion does require belief. The positive evidence takes the form of an explanatory argument from linguistic patterns surrounding the give and take of assertion. Looming large in the background of the discussion is whe...
متن کاملThe Express Knowledge Account of Assertion
Many philosophers favour the simple knowledge account of assertion, which says you may assert something only if you know it. The simple account is true but importantly incomplete. I defend a more informative thesis, namely, that you may assert something only if your assertion expresses knowledge. I call this ‘the express knowledge account of assertion’, which I argue better handles a wider rang...
متن کاملStudies of inference from lack of knowledge.
Two experiments were performed to investigate the conditions affecting lack-of-knowledge inferences. The lack-of-knowledge inference is a metainference, an inference based on knowledge about one's own knowledge, in which the absence of information concerning a possible assertion is taken as evidence that the assertion is false. In Experiment 1, it was shown that lack of knowledge about an asser...
